The Southwestern Mexican state of Oaxaca is known for, among other things, its colorful handwoven textiles. It's home to a number of indigenous groups, each of which hold their own generations-old textile traditions, including hand-spinning cotton or silk and creating vividly colored natural dyes that have been sourced locally for thousands of years. Big discovery? Veggie burgers are still hard for restaurants to get right. We applaud those that make their own patties from scratch and really, we can't be bothered to order the frozen Gardenburger kind of things. Read More

The concept of "Christmas In July" promotions has never really made much sense to me. This is Texas, and nothing about triple-digit temperatures makes me think of the holiday season. Still, what likely started as a clever marketing strategy for stores to boost sluggish summer sales has inspired a damn delicious burger at Rodeo Goat in Fort Worth. Read More

The Fort Worth rookie had navigated every pothole (Chubby's), landmine (Off-Site Kitchen) and roadblock (Charley's) in its path to burger glory. But it hadn't faced a battle-tested competitor like Chop House, chef Kenny Mills' ever-expanding Arlington burger mecca that finished second in our 2011 bracket. Read More
And then it arrived, this mythical burger we'd heard so much about over the past few weeks, this gargantuan combo of meat, chorizo, slices of avocado, queso and fried egg that has the local burger blogosphere in a greasy lather, this new burger that will make us forget about all the other new burgers, this thing called Caca Oaxaca at this place called Rodeo Goat Icehouse... Rodeo Goat is typically atypical. Even the d̩cor is hard to pin down. With its indoor/outdoor seating, the Goat is sort of like a Texas Hill Country general store, plus a healthy serving of kitsch the Christmas tree is trimmed with empty beer cans. Seating is mostly cocktail tables with barstools, though there is a little private area with real tables and chairs. The back patio, partly covered and festooned with little twinkly lights, includes a small wood-burning stove and a bunch of upscale picnic tables amid a sea of pea gravel. What? No dance floor?!.. In my highly professional and totally expert opinion, no matter how fatty or juicy or upscale a hamburger is, it's still only good for sopping up one or two drinks. Your constitution might be such that a burger or other equivalent booze sponge is good for five or six beers, but mine is not, especially when said beers are 7 percent alcohol by volume. Thinking a big fatty meal will keep drunkenness at bay is (barely) acceptable logic at two in the morning, because after you've shoveled a chicken-fried steak in your face, you're probably just an hour away from conking out at home...
